Vartai Gallery, Vilnius: SHOW IT

18 April – 26 May 2012

April 18, 6 p. m., VARTAI gallery will open the show of Jurga Barilaitė titled “Parodyk” (“Show It”).

The goal of the exhibition is to sum up the state in which the artist has been living for the past few years – the intermediate space between video art and painting.

Throughout the 20th century, there were many attempts to declare painting an obsolete way of expression and to replace it with faster, combined or simply “more modern” methods of art, such as photography, video art, installation or action, but artists kept reverting to canvass and paint. Thus, Barilaitė paints filming and films painting, but she is not able to make any conclusions and to begin creating. The show will feature the works titled Nepadarytų darbų archyvas (Archive of Pending Works), Ką daryčiau, jei daryčiau (What I Would Do, If I Did), Kas netapė, tas tapys dar (Who Hasn’t Painted, Will) and Escape, that point to the intermediate space between creation and non-creation, and to the potential of the unrealised creativity.
