Unattended Cermony@ 418 Contemporary Art Gallery, Bucharest

418 Contemporary Art Gallery has the pleasure to invite you to the exhibition Unattended Ceremony, signed by Cristian Răduță. This is the third exhibition of the artist in the gallery space. His previous exhibitions, Horn White (2010, curated by Aurelia Mocanu) and Terraferma (2011, curated by Adriana Oprea), together with his participation in the summer residencies from Cetate, organized by Joana Grevers Foundation in partnership with 418 Contemporary Art Gallery since 2008, have proven a fruitful and rewarding collaboration that has lasted for over six years, in which he participated in numerous local and international exhibitions, international art fairs, book publishing etc.

The opening will take place on Monday, 3rd of March 2014, starting 6 PM. The exhibition can be seen until April 30th, from Monday to Friday, 11 AM – 7 PM. A catalogue containing recent works and critical reviews of the artist will be available on the occasion of his newest solo-show.

The Unattended Ceremony or “The Place Where We Always Hurry to Arrive and Always Come Too Late”

Cristian Răduță is a preoccupied artist. Preoccupied with art as a subject, with art as an object, with the evolution and continuous changes in the contemporary artistic landscape, with the relations between the artwork and the surrounding space, with the reinvention of some consecrated, primordial forms, as well as with the crises which can occur during the evolution of a work of art.

His uninterrupted and prolific activity in the last 10 years may seem to describe, undoubtedly at a first glance, a plenary artistic personality, well established and even patriarchal –  an artist of silence and of white volumes of stone and plaster, all turned into metaphysical creations, and behind which we can find the strained body of the man – artist who carves and models incessantly: this would be  a snapshot of the artist if we were to recall one of the most common images of the sculptor in his studio, either from present times or from the past.

Yet Cristian Răduță doesn't fit such a description, on the contrary, his fascination with these volumes will be turned into a continuous exploration which leads to the transformation and changing of the meaning. In his hands, a rough volume will become diaphanous, while exotic animals will be brought in his art in order to highlight the strangeness and the social alienation. The rhino with his strange shapes, this mix of awkwardness, shyness and violence has become, for 9 years now, a character. Similarly to a writer who studies for years the same character, the sculptor has studied the same form. Until he has ended up by breathing its air. And then, fulfilled with this discovery, he would go on, transformed.

From the paradoxical softness of a violent body, the artist has reached spontaneously the latent violence of some safe spaces and the anxiety generated by them. A symbol of safety and strength – the concrete wall – will become in this case an object of stagnation, the way of no return. Such moments of crisis may occur in the existence of anybody who is interested in the undetermined things, such as pure art, the way it is perceived during creation and by the artist's mind.

The artistic anxiety of everyday life will be materialized often in these concrete walls, due to the overlapping of ideals, to a too long list of dreams, to the too thick files of desired travels, to the too big demands and to the too small promises. A dehumanization to such a degree that it would bypass the heart of the matter, the reason of this anxiety, the art itself. Like a butterfly caught in an attic where windows have been closed, the artist attempts to escape his own fears by harming himself and his own creation. By making it increasingly smaller, shyer and rarer.

Cristian Răduță, who doesn't find his place in the frame of the description above, feels very near this danger and will express his feeling into a project about interrupted races, about obstructions, delays, alternative routes and fragile butterflies caught in concrete walls.

The celebration of life and the symbolic “ceremony” derived from it, together with all the necessary rituals, will remain all unfulfilled due to multiple causes. The vitality and the sap can dry up often, and art can be in a conflict with the existence when it is not a natural extension of it, but an isolated entity in an ivory tower. An artist can often conceive his work as an imaginary castle, which he will never inhabit, and will only bear his name. Cristian Răduță's most recent works feature a combination between resistant (concrete, resin, bone) and fragile materials (toothpicks, branches), entire volumes and expressive cuts which trouble the harmony of form. The dimensions of objects are misleading – the small gets bigger and the large gets smaller. The tree is a miniature, the flag is over-sized, while the toothpicks can be seen as spears stuck into the wall of a fortress.

Cristian Răduță's art can be placed today between activism and poetry, while his emblematic rhino has lent to the artist his tanned skin, and walls have risen up out of it. (Simona Vilău, curator, February 2014)

Cristian Răduță (b. 1982) lives and works in Bucharest. He is a sculptor that also uses drawing and installation and he earned a PhD title in Visual Arts (2013). He studied with Mircea Spataru (class of 2005) and currently he is associate lecturer at the National University of Arts from Bucharest, Sculpture Department. From 2006 to 2008, he has been an alumnus of Vasile Parvan Scholarship at the Accademia di Romania in Rome, Italy. He has been represented by 418 Contemporary Art Gallery since 2008. The gallery organized numerous solo and collective exhibitions in Romania and abroad. His works can be found in public and private collections from different countries, such as Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, Waterloo, Ontario, MNAC Collection Bucharest, Art in Embassies Collection U.S.A. etc.
