The Art of Mediation

International symposium on the relation of critical pedagogy and contemporary art

Date: October 26-27, 2012

As a closing event of the Artists at Schools project an international symposium on the relation of critical pedagogy and contemporary art takes place. The Art of Mediation project is organised around the concept of democracy. By approaching this topic from the point of critical pedagogy, we would like to highlight and reflect on the relations between knowledge, authority and power. The relation of art and education is discussed on two levels: the institutional level (the role of art institutions and the 'educational turn' in the artfield, alternative and critical pedagogical models in connection with art educational models; student movements and initiatives from the 1960s until today) and on the level of collaboration between artists and young people (interpersonal communication, matters of positioning, knowledge production and mediation, experiencing).

The participants include: Eva Egermann (artist, researcher, Vienna), Janna Graham (educator, researcher, curator, London), Anna Harding (art historian, curator, London), Maria Lind (curator, Stockholm), Marion von Osten (artist, researcher, curator, Berlin), Attila Tordai S. (curator, Cluj), Melinda Kovai – Eszter Neumann (sociologists, Budapest), Márton Gulyás (theater managing director, Budapest), the artists taking part in the Artists at School pilot projects Zsolt Keserue, Lilla Khoór, Ágnes Szabics, Péter Szabó.
