THE FOURTH KILOMETER

11 October – 17 November 2013

Opening: 11 October, Friday, 18:00

The Fourth Kilometer project of the Misirkov / Bogdanov tandem has been realised since a task was set for the documentation of the infrastructural development of a building site. On the grounds of a former military real estate of 270 decares at the Fourth Kilometer in Sofia, a Scientific and Technological Park is being under construction. The construction will completely transform the existing terrain and it is its documentation that will keep the memory of the military units there.

Misirkov / Bogdanov have approached the task as archaeologists having undertaken field research. They find every single object – thing that is a remnant of human presence, a memory of soldier’s life, and, through the means of photography, they turn it into an artifact. A thrown-away soldier’s helmet has been assimilated into the surrounding landscape and now resembles a natural object. A lonely sentry-box has been engulfed by the greenness around. The lens gets closer and closer and the detail grows into the foreground. Large-scale photographs decode the detail and it takes the leading role, turning the terrain into an abstraction. The viewer loses the feeling that s/he is in a place, well forgotten by man and time, in anticipation of the upcoming new.

The documentary presented at the exhibition completes the narrative of the photographs.
