Soft, flexible, tactile fabric as a powerful, overwhelming and loud instrument? This is precisely the experience delivered by the performance Lilytronica by Greek artist Afroditi Psarra. Within an experimental electronic sound the artist successfully merges both the related and the incompatible: technology and textile, Arduino and embroidery, pop culture and glitch, folk tradition and DIY electronics.

The performance is based on live improvisation and usage of embroidered synthesizers with LilyPad Arduino microcontrollers, sensors and actuators which are embroidered into the textile, while the design of the instrument is visually inspired by 80's pop electronics and legendary instruments such as Roland TR-909 drum machine, Microkorg and Korg Monotron synthesizer. However, this reference remains purely visual: the electronic embroidery by Afroditi Psarra is sonically completely unique, and reflects the typical DIY characteristics of artistic experimentations with e-textiles presenting a new perspective on the issues of revisiting and reinterpreting female crafts like embroidery and knitting through contemporary technology.

The Noisy Textiles workshop moderated by Afroditi Psarra will be held on the 10th and 11th May in Zagreb’s Student Centre Clubu as an exciting introduction into the world of the soft electronic circuits, programmable microcontroller usage, digital electronics and conductible materials. The performance and the workshop are part of the OFF program of the festival Izlog suvremenog zvuka and are a result of the collaboration between organizations Kontejner,, Music Showroom SC, Association for Culture Development URK and Mochvara Club.

Afroditi Psarra is a Greek multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the boundaries between folk tradition and handicrafts, creative coding and sonic experimentation. Her artworks include a wide variety of media, from electronic embroideries and wearables to interactive installations and sound performances. She has presented her work in festivals like Amber in Istanbul, Piksel in Bergen, Transmediale and CTM in Berlin, Electropixel in Nantes and MakerFaire Rome. She finished an internship at Disney Research in Zurich.
