The renowned choreographer Ksenija Zec created an exciting multimedia project combining visual arts and dance through an interactive relationship between dancers and gallery visitors. Premiere: 21/09 from 19-22 hours.

The very title of the project – Jukebox – defines the nature of the work Visitors choose their favorite song on a jukebox specially designed for this occasion, while two female dancers perform a dancing feedback to the chosen song. One of the aspects of the project is introducing interested visitors to various countries’ music scenes, outside the exclusive matrices of popular music. In that context, the project contains a strong multicultural significance.

Jukebox is a multimedia dance project created as an intervention of the performance art into space, ideological framework and format of exhibition at museums/gallery institutions. Jukebox was designed for the new gallery named Lauba House for People and Art. For the duration of various exhibitions (3 months), the two female dancers will, once a week throughout opening hours, present a dance performance spatially defined in relation to the current exhibition. Such a concept will undoubtedly subvert the conventional duration of a performance, as well as its definition and form.

The dance performances were created as a choreography/dramaturgical response to 15 selected songs that question the relationship between personal choice, collective memory and mythologizing music matrices. As a dance performance, Jukebox expands its performative frame into interaction, since dancers in this situation function as exhibiting objects, i.e. they perform the music which visitors choose on the jukebox. The object itself, the jukebox, will be a sculpture created by Igor Ruf. The sculpture will be created for the needs of the project but after the performative part of the project it will remain at the Lauba exhibition space as a separate artifact.
