CONTINUOUS CONVERSATIONS

SLAVS AND TATARS & JANEK SIMON

OPENING: TUESDAY, JUNE 19TH 2012, 6PM
THE EXHIBITION WILL BE OPEN UNTIL: JULY 8th 2012

Continuous Conversation is an alterable set of open and decentralized exhibition structures that happens in multiple positions (Poland, Uruguay, Kyrgyzstan etc.) in the form of an on-going dialogue. The project aims to build the interrelations with the audience through the performative process of identifying/unpacking the ideological, economic and political dimensions of the recent histories and geographies.

Janek Simon and the Slavs and Tatars collective bridge the gap between theory and artistic practice by being permanent researchers and travellers. They cross several disciplines: from performance to interventions in public space and visual art. The works involve research and performance in making process. They do not represent the temporal illusion of an event but actually present an event as art. Although they also consider history as a set of events, it does not necessarily mean that they create history. They rather focus on the dynamism in how definitive history and geography get imaged and written. Having allocated the geopolitical narratives they work with, they are continuously mediating meanings and creating theirs alterations. The Continuous Conversations project is concerned with the concept of artistic geography, which presents the subject/object and its process of formation related to the particular location and its variable parameters. The various conjunctions of differences allow a changing point of reference and present a variety of vectors and activities. As an artistic practice, it produces the eventful possibility to actively articulate and negotiate positions related to belonging and not belonging towards the place and its history. Here it is a spacious practice of continuous conversations that allows the initiators, participants and viewer to locate themselves relative to the rest.
