Elipsis Gallery, Istanbul: Above Zero

1.11 – 14.12.2012

Elipsis Gallery is pleased to announce Above Zero, the first solo show of  internationally renowned German photographer Olaf Otto Becker to be held in Turkey, from 1 November until 14 December 2012. Above Zero covers Becker’s vast body of works of melting ice on the surface of inland Greenland.

Olaf Otto Becker 's photography initiates from his deep concerns with environmental issues. In his recent series Above Zero, he captures nature’s supremacy in his expressive and sublime landscapes of Greenland. He traces and documents four rivers that have formed due to the catastrophic effects of global warming, creating a map with the coordinates of these rivers. His dedication and resistance to such extreme working conditions such as cold and difficult weather, his mastery of 8 x 10 large format photography enables him to express the vast beauty and serenity of nature’s sense of power. These extraordinary images portray how vulnerable mankind is against nature and in the future we will be exposed to the melting of polar ice.

Olaf Otto Becker was born in Lübeck-Travemünde, Germany in 1959. In 1991 he studied philosophy at the Lugwig- Maximilians-Üniversitat in Münich, following his studies in communication design in Augsburg, specializing in photography. His first publication Under the Nordic Light (published by Schaden) was nominated for the renowned Recontres D’Arles Book award. Broken Line (published by Hatje Cantz with an introduction by Gerry Badger) was awarded with the 2008 German Photo Book Prize. In 2008, he was nominated for the Prix Pictet “Water” and again in 2012 for Prix Pictet “Power”. His work has been exhibited in Austria, Germany, in the Netherlands, in the United States including U.S. Library of Congress.
