CASA DELL’ARTE, Istanbul: Art Residency / EVERY BREATH I TAKE IS ONE OF YOURS

Art Residency // EVERY BREATH I TAKE IS ONE OF YOURS
Eva Magyarosi, Ivana Ivkovic, Kiah Reading, Radhika Agarwala, Tuğba Çeliktir

14/06/2013 – 17/07/2013

This hypothesis on how we share our collective atmosphere put forward by our resident Ivana Ivkovic through the translation of a song lyric by Turkish singer and songwriter Zeki Müren takes on a new relevance as people at Istanbul’s Gezi park and all over Turkey are fighting for their physical and psychological right to breathe. The statement also serves as a blanket sentence for the residency experience – five artists from different countries have gathered in Torba for six weeks, leaving behind their cities, workspaces and quotidian habits; bringing with them and sharing with each other only what is essential.

Radhika Agarwala uses gold in the brink of decoration and subversion. With her installation in Torba and her intricate digital collages, she re-explores her personal story through her interactions with the Torba community. Tuğba Çeliktir chronicles her stay in an alternative diary with twenty eight meticulous drawings of the photos in the third pages of newspapers, challenging us to consider the role of the media in our perceptions of guilt and innocence. Ivana Ivkovic engages with Zeki Müren’s words while Eva Magyarosi, an acclaimed animation artist, uses a wall installation to tell her story. Kiah Reading explores the links between resort culture, excess and the body with his distinctive humor and irony.
