Biennial of Young Artists, 5th edition, 2012

Between 11th of October – 11th of November, META Cultural Foundation organises in Bucharest the Biennial of Young Artists. The title of this year's edition is Overlapping Biennial and its concept emerged from a project of contextual art. The Biennial furthers an innovative way of shaping the interaction between the audience and art. Mostly, Overlapping Biennial is a virtual event. The connection between the virtual world and reality is achived through QR codes – a type of barcode – which generate content after being scaned with a telephone/tablet/PDA.

„Considering the contemporary age of communication, everything tends to become co-creation, sharing and linking information. We take this to the next level in Overlapping Biennial where visual art is seen as visual information, replacing the traditional perception with a code of information. The interactive experience between the viewer and the artwork itself becomes a link at the border between reality and virtual reality ”. (Radu Pervolovici, the Biennial director)

In real world, the events of the Biennial will take place in different spaces. The selected works will be exhibited indoor at Foto Anexa – MNAC, Goethe-Institut Bukarest, the Hungarian Cultural Center in Bucharest, and outdoor at MNAR, OAR, Carturesti Verona, and in a series of underground stations: Piata Unirii, Universitate, Piata Victoriei, Basarab and Bazilescu. Simultaneously, the project of SZAF group can be explored in the following locations: Gara de Nord, C.A. Rosetti Street, Calea Victoriei/Splaiul Independentei bridge, and Groapa Vacaresti. The QR-codes related to the works selected by Hilde de Bruijn will be published in România liberă newspaper (12, 15, 17, 19, 22, 24, 26, 29, and 31 October).

In Overlapping Biennial coexist eleven curatorial discourses, and the artistic polyphony is achived through the contribuition of more than 70 visual artists, who are active in Canada, USA, China, Singapore, Israel, Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Serbia, Turkey and Romania.
