0GMS Gallery, Sofia: CAPITALLICA: KILL ‘EM ALL vs CORPORATOR: TOTAL DEATH

0GMS gallery presents:
CAPITALLICA: KILL ‘EM ALL vs CORPORATOR: TOTAL DEATH

Nemanja Cvijanovic

17 May – 15 July 2013

CAPITALLICA: KILL ‘EM ALL vs CORPORATOR: TOTAL DEATH exhibition is dedicated to the absence of political and ideological alternatives to global corporate neo-liberal capitalist empire. Referring to Oliver Ressler’s statement – “Elections are a con” – Nemanja Cvijanović ironically speaks about the paradox and the illusion of democracy practiced by the electoral machine, and about the irrational and irresponsible approach of citizens to the politic and future of their society.

Presented works are:

Applause! (2008/10) – video documentation of collective performance – fake manifestation
(demonstration) staged in a form of a film set – with extras (250 persons) paid (9€ each) to
manifest (or protest) at a square. By questioning a transitional society the Applause project
attempts to touch anomalies of social relations, civil rights and duties, using a method of
direct communication with citizens through a media of action (manifestation);

DO NOT FUCK WITH SOCIAL DEMOCRACY (2011) – video/object – white flag as a symbol of surrender is transformed into a revolutionary and ideologically coloured red. In relation to the viewer, Do not fuck with Social Democracy! works as a space of ideology which is impossible to avoid, while the ideology’s deceit is so obvious that it is impossible to exit without any difficulties. It is precisely this point of symbolic transition, the transformation of the emptied white flag into red and back, that is the main message of the work and the trap it sets for the viewer. This work draws attention to the responsibility of the individual in relation to detecting contemporary social reality, the reality of historic memory and the establishment of value systems.

Svijest razborita, kita je spram ponosa usrženog / Reasonable consciousness is piece of shit,
comparing it with pride injected into the core
(2004) – marquetry in pork and biff bones –
croatian coat of arms and historical “national” symbols etched into the bare bones was
Cvijanovic’s answer to the festival Coolture of social welfare (Cooltura socijale), and to the irrational devotion of the poorest part of the society to the hard-core nationalism constructed by the neo-liberal capitalist regime.
